Take charge of your overall wellness
A person's wellness is made up of much more than just physical health, exercise or nutrition. It encompasses multiple aspects of everyday life including physical, mental, and personal well-being. To achieve overall wellness a person must actively make choices that lead toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is especially important as we age because regular exercise and proper nutrition can help prevent a variety of ailments including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and fall risk behaviours. We have outlined a few key ideas that a person can use to help improve their overall wellness.
Keep active for 30 minutes a day:
Keeping active for at least 30 minutes each day can benefit both your physical and mental health. Activities to keep your body moving can include going for a walk, spending time in the garden, going to the gym, going for a swim, or participating in some social sport. By taking just a few steps to improve your daily activity, you will start to see big improvements in your overall wellbeing. Only spending 30 minutes a day on activity is an achievable goal for most and is a great way to kick start your wellness journey.
Take time for yourself:
There are plenty of benefits in taking time for yourself. It gives your brain a chance to reboot, it helps improve your concentration, it assists with increasing productivity, it helps you discover or rediscover your voice, it gives you a chance to think deeply, and helps you to problem solve more effectively. Taking time for yourself also gives you a better sense of balance and self-awareness which can lead to a better understanding of yourself. Including what drives you, what inspires you, what excites you. This, in turn, can have a positive effect not only on the quality of your relationship with yourself, but also on the quality of your relationships with others - ultimately helping to improve your overall wellness.
Spend time outdoors:
Spending time outdoors is a great way to help improve your wellness. Spending time outdoors has some great benefits including decreasing stress, boosting your immunity, naturally increasing your level of activity, as well as helps to calm the mind. Even if it is just 10-15 minutes per day, the outside time is bound to boost your mood and overall attitude towards life. Easy ways to work in some outside time is to eat your breakfast, lunch and/or dinner outside. You could also choose to go for a walk or run outside rather than on a treadmill, or you could even work or relax outside for a period of time each day.
Improving your wellness is so important and will assist you living a longer, happier, and healthier life. Try incorporating these ideas into your weekly schedule and you’re sure to notice a difference.
